RenewAge, a energy solutions company based in Culver City, is raising $5 million in a Series A round. RenewAge is an innovative Energy Services Company (ESCO) specializing in custom engineered energy solutions for commercial, industrial, retail, and multifamily residential property owners & managers. RenewAge has developed a proprietary energy efficiency cloud based software and hardware control system to manage energy consumption. Founded in 2010, RenewAge is already profitable and hasn't taken in any external money prior to this round, which it plans to put toward building new products and expanding offices in California and U.S cities.

Given the power of software, where can one most effectively reduce energy consumption? As buildings account for 40% of total U.S. energy consumption, the built environment is a good place to start. But not only for environmental reasons. Energy efficiency is a vast economic opportunity for property owners and service providers, worth $1.2 trillion in this decade, as stated by McKinsey’s 2009 report on energy efficiency.

In this report, McKinsey offers a detailed analysis of the magnitude of the efficiency potential in non-transportation uses of energy, a thorough assessment of the barriers that impede the capture of greater efficiency, and an outline of the practical solutions available to unlock the potential.
The research shows that the US economy has the potential to reduce annual non-transportation energy consumption by roughly 23 percent by 2020, eliminating more than $1.2 trillion in waste—well beyond the $520 billion upfront investment (not including program costs) that would be required. The reduction in energy use would also result in the abatement of 1.1 gigatons of greenhouse-gas emissions annually—the equivalent of taking the entire US fleet of passenger vehicles and light trucks off the roads.
Such energy savings will be possible, however, only if the United States can overcome significant sets of barriers. These barriers are widespread and persistent, and will require an integrated set of solutions to overcome them—including information and education, incentives and financing, codes and standards, and deployment resources well beyond current levels.
In addition to the above central conclusion, five observations will be relevant to a national debate about how best to pursue energy efficiency opportunities of the magnitude identified and within the timeframe considered in this report. Specifically, an overarching strategy would need to:
- Recognize energy efficiency as an important energy resource that can help meet future energy needs while the nation concurrently develops new no- and low-carbon energy sources
- Formulate and launch at both national and regional levels an integrated portfolio of proven, piloted, and emerging approaches to unlock the full potential of energy efficiency
- Identify methods to provide the significant upfront funding required by any plan to capture energy efficiency
- Forge greater alignment between utilities, regulators, government agencies, manufacturers, and energy consumers
- Foster innovation in the development and deployment of next-generation energy-efficiency technologies to ensure ongoing productivity gains

The decline in U.S. energy consumption can be attributed to the economic recession, which has had a particularly hard impact on the building sector. Total energy expenditures in the building sector decreased 8% to 417.8 billion from 2008 to 2009, the largest percent drop in the last 30 years. (1.2.3) The value of new building construction dropped again for the fourth year in a row and was valued at 377.4 billion, 55% less than at its peak in 2006, when new building construction was valued at 843.6 billion. (1.3.2) As expected, the number of people employed in architecture and construction has also decreased since 2006. More than 7.9 million people were employed in the two industries then, compared to 5.7 million in 2010, a 27% drop. (1.3.7).
Forty-one percent of U.S. primary energy was consumed by the buildings sector, compared to 30% by the industrial sector and 29% by the transportation sector. Of the 39 quads consumed in the buildings sector, homes accounted for 54% and commercial buildings accounted for 46% (1.1.3). Of the energy sources used by the U.S. buildings sector, 75% came from fossil fuels, 16% from nuclear generation, and 9% from renewables. (1.1.8)
